RESUMO

Flammulina filiformis (F. filiformis) is called the 'benefiting intelligence' mushroom. There is a notable difference between a yellow cultivar (with a robust aroma) and a white mutant cultivar (with a high yield) of F. filiformis. A thorough analysis of aroma differences is essential to improve the aroma of high-yield strains. This study employed a combination of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O) and aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) to analyze the variations in aroma compounds. Then, the contribution of the odorants was determined using flavor dilution (FD) factors and odor activity values (OAVs). Aroma omission and recombination experiments were used to identify the key odorants. A total of 16 key aroma compounds were characterized in F. filiformis, along with four eight-carbon volatiles (3-octanone, 3-octanol, octanal, and 1-octen-3-ol). Finally, the dominant aroma characteristic was "sweet" for the yellow strain, while it was "green" for the white strain. More research is required to investigate the enzymes and corresponding genes that regulate the synthesis of aroma compounds in F. filiformis for future breeding programs.

Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagrall) is one of the most important pests of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (Linn.) Walp in South China. Four Orius species, including Orius minutus (L.), Orius nagaii (Yasunaga), Orius sauteri (Poppius), and Orius strigicollis (Poppius), have been commercially produced and widely used as natural enemies of pests in China. In this study, we evaluated the control efficiency of these Orius species on M. usitatus in tropical Hainan Province, China, by recording the survival rates, developmental times, and predation effects in laboratory and semi-field conditions. Laboratory experiments showed that all these 4 Orius species preyed on M. usitatus under the experimental temperatures (25, 30, and 35 °C), and O. strigicollis exhibited the highest survival rate and predation effect. Semi-field cage experiments showed that the control effect of 4 Orius species on M. usitatus was significantly higher than that under normal chemical control, with O. strigicollis having the highest effect. Greenhouse experiments in Hainan Province, China, confirmed that O. strigicollis had a significant control effect on M. usitatus. Our study indicated that O. strigicollis has a significant potential for the control of M. usitatus in cowpea fields in southern China.

P2-type Fe-Mn-based oxides offer excellent discharge specific capacity and are as affordable as typical layered oxide cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). After Cu modification, though they can improve the cycling performance and air stability, the discharge specific capacity will be reduced. Considering the complementary nature of biphasic phases in electrochemistry, hybridizing P2/O3 hybrid phases can enhance both the storage performance of the battery and specific capacity. Herein, a hybrid phase composite with high capacity and good cycle performance is deliberately designed and successfully prepared by controlling the amount of Mg doping in the layered oxide. It has been found that the introduction of Mg can activate anion redox in the oxide layer, resulting in a significant increase in the specific discharge capacity of the material. Meanwhile, the dual-phase structure can produce an interlocking effect, thus effectively alleviating structure strain. The degradation of cycling performance caused by structural damage during the high-voltage charging and discharging process is clearly mitigated. The results show that the specific discharge capacity of Na0.67Cu0.2Mg0.1Fe0.2Mn0.5O2 is as high as 212.0 mAh g-1 at 0.1C rate and 186.2 mAh g-1 at 0.2C rate. After 80 cycles, the capacity can still maintain 88.1%. Moreover, the capacity and cycle performance as well as the stability can still remain stable even in the high-voltage window. Therefore, this work offers an insightful exploration for the development of composite cathode materials for SIBs.

316 L stainless steel is an ideal bipolar plate material for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). However, the thickening of the passivation film on the stainless steel surface and the dissolution of corrosive ions during operation will affect the durability of the PEMFC. Herein, a heterogeneous layer is prepared on the surface of 316 L stainless steel through dual ion implantation of molybdenum ion and carbon ion combined with heat treatment to promote the corrosion resistance and conductivity of the bipolar plate. The ion implantation technique resulted in a uniform distribution of Mo and C elements on the surface of 316 L stainless steel, with a modified layer depth of about 70-80 nm. The electrical conductivity of the ion implanted samples was significantly improved, and the interfacial contact resistance was reduced from 464.25 mΩ × cm2 to 42.49 mΩ × cm2. Heat treatment enhances the surface homogenization, repairs the defects of irradiation damage, and improves the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. The corrosion current density of (Mo+C)-600 samples decreased from 1.21 × 10-8 A/cm2 to 2.95 × 10-9 A/cm2 under the long-term corrosion condition of 4 h. These results can provide guidance for the modification of stainless steel bipolar plates.

This study identified and characterized the gene encoding recep tor-type guanylate cyclase-22-like (GCY-22; OnGCY) from the pirate bug Orius nagaii, an important biological control agent. The full-length cDNA of the GCY of O. nagaii was obtained by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE); it had a total length of 4888 base pairs (bp), of which the open reading frame (ORF) was 3750 bp, encoding a polypeptide of 1249 amino acid residues. The physicochemical properties of OnGCY were predicted and analyzed by using relevant ExPASy software, revealing a molecular formula of C6502H10122N1698O1869S57, molecular weight of ~143,811.57 kDa, isoelectric point of 6.55, and fat index of 90.04. The resulting protein was also shown to have a signal peptide, two transmembrane regions, and a conserved tyrosine kinase (tyrkc). Silencing OnGCY by RNA interference significantly inhibited ovarian development and decreased fertility in female O. nagaii in the treated versus the control group. Additionally, OnGCY silencing significantly decreased the expression levels of other GCY and Vg genes. Thus, these results clarify the structure and biological function of OnGCY, which has an important role in insect fecundity. The results also provide a reference for agricultural pest control and future large-scale breeding of biological control agents.

A new isopimarane-type diterpene clinacanoid A (1) together with seven known terpenoids (2-8) were obtained from the Clinacanthus nutans. Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analysis (NMR, HR-ESI-MS), and the absolute configuration of 1 was established based on single crystal X-ray diffraction. The inhibitory activity of all the compounds on NO production in lipopolysaccharide-induced (LPS) mouse leukemic monocyte macrophage RAW264.7 cells was evaluated. Among them, compounds 1 and 3 showed potential anti-inflammatory activities, with IC50 values of 13.3 ± 0.3 and 12.4 ± 0.4 µM, respectively.

Forkhead box O (FoxO), a key transcription factor in many species, participates in numerous physiological and pathological processes of organisms through a variety of signaling pathways. In the present study, we established DsFoxO knockout (DsFoxO-KO) strain using CRISPR/Cas9, and the influence on development and fecundity of mutant strain were evaluated. To clarify the corresponding mechanism, a transcriptome analysis was conducted subsequently. The results showed that the survival rates of the DsFoxO-KO strain in larval, pupal, and adult stages were all significantly lower than those of control. The duration of the pupal stage was similar between the two strains; however, durations of egg, larva, adult preoviposition period (APOP), and total APOP (TPOP) in the DsFoxO-KO strain were all significantly longer compared to those of the control strain. The fecundity of the DsFoxO-KO strain was 20.31 eggs/female, which was significantly lower than that of the control strain (430.47 eggs/female). With the transcriptome analysis, 612 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Following COG and GO analyses, we found that most of the DEGs were associated with the metabolic process. According to the KEGG database, the mTOR signaling, MAPK signaling, Wnt signaling, and Toll and Imd signaling pathways; insect hormone biosynthesis; autophagy; and apoptosis were altered in the DsFoxO-KO strain. These results demonstrated that knockout of DsFoxO in D. suzukii significantly influenced its development and fecundity, while transcriptome analysis provided insights to explore the corresponding molecular mechanism. These findings highlighted the critical role of FoxO in D. suzukii and might contribute to the development of novel management strategies for these flies in the future.

The Omicron variant of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS­CoV­2) infected a substantial proportion of Chinese population, and understanding the factors underlying the severity of the disease and fatality is valuable for future prevention and clinical treatment. We recruited 64 patients with invasive ventilation for COVID-19 and performed metatranscriptomic sequencing to profile host transcriptomic profiles, plus viral, bacterial, and fungal content, as well as virulence factors and examined their relationships to 28-day mortality were examined. In addition, the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples from invasive ventilated hospital/community-acquired pneumonia patients (HAP/CAP) sampled in 2019 were included for comparison. Genomic analysis revealed that all Omicron strains belong to BA.5 and BF.7 sub-lineages, with no difference in 28-day mortality between them. Compared to HAP/CAP cohort, invasive ventilated COVID-19 patients have distinct host transcriptomic and microbial signatures in the lower respiratory tract; and in the COVID-19 non-survivors, we found significantly lower gene expressions in pathways related viral processes and positive regulation of protein localization to plasma membrane, higher abundance of opportunistic pathogens including bacterial Alloprevotella, Caulobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, Ralstonia and fungal Aspergillus sydowii and Penicillium rubens. Correlational analysis further revealed significant associations between host immune responses and microbial compositions, besides synergy within viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens. Our study presents the relationships of lower respiratory tract microbiome and transcriptome in invasive ventilated COVID-19 patients, providing the basis for future clinical treatment and reduction of fatality.

Co-encapsulated xanthoxylin (GX-50) and vitamin C (Vc) microcapsules (GX-50-Vc-M) were prepared by the combination of a water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsion with complex coacervation. The W1/O/W2 double emulsion was prepared by two-step emulsification, and it has a uniform particle size of 8.388 µm and high encapsulation efficiencies of GX-50 (85.95%) and Vc (67.35%) under optimized process conditions. Complex coacervation occurs at pHs 4.0-4.7, which has the highest encapsulation efficiency of GX-50 and Vc at pH 4.5. The complex coacervate with tannic acid solidifying (namely, wet microcapsules) has better mechanical properties and also enhances the ability of co-encapsulation of active ingredients. The resulting microcapsules by freeze-drying of wet microcapsules were characterized by UV-vis absorbance spectroscopy (UV-vis), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FI-IR), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·) radical scavenging, and in vitro permeation measurements. Under optimal conditions, the encapsulation efficiency and drug loading of GX-50-Vc-M for GX-50 and Vc are, respectively, 78.38 ± 0.51 and 59.34 ± 0.56%, and 35.6 ± 0.68 and 29.8 ± 0.92%. A slight shift in the FTIR peak between single GX-50 or Vc and GX-50-Vc-M confirmed the successful co-encapsulation of GX-50 and Vc in microcapsules. GX-50-Vc-M has bridged irregular spherical aggregates, while GX-50 and Vc are, respectively, encapsulated in hydrophobic and hydrophilic cavities of microcapsules in an amorphous dissolved state. GX-50-Vc-M has the highest DPPH· radical scavenging rate of 62.51%, and the scavenging process of GX-50-Vc-M on DPPH· radicals is more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation model. Moreover, the in vitro permeation of GX-50 and Vc in GX-50-Vc-M can reach maximum values of 40 and 60%, respectively. This concludes that GX-50-Vc-M is a promising delivery system for the penetration of the antioxidant into the deeper layers of the skin for the antioxidant effect.

Breast cancer (BC) is highly malignant and its mortality rate remains high. The development of immunotherapy has gradually improved the prognosis and survival rate of patients. Therefore, identifying molecular markers concerned with BC immunity is of great importance for the treatment of this disease. The Cancer Genome Atlas-breast invasive carcinoma (TCGA-BRCA) was utilized as the training set while the BC expression dataset from the gene expression omnibus database was taken as the validation set here. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis combined with Pearson analysis and Tumor immune estimation resource (TIMER) was used to obtain immune cell-related hub gene module. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were performed on this module. Then, receiver operating characteristic curves combining Kaplan-Meier was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the model. Feature genes were screened and the independence of risk score was evaluated by univariate and multivariate Cox analyses. Differences in immune characteristics were analyzed via single-sample gene set enrichment analysis and CIBERSORT, and differences in gene mutation frequency were assessed via GenVisR analysis. Finally, the expression levels of prognostic feature genes in BC cells were validated by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). In this study, cell immune-related gene modules in TCGA-BRCA were successfully excavated, and a five-gene (TNFRSF14, NFKBIA, DLG3, IRF2, and CYP27A1) prognostic model was established. The prognostic model could effectively forecast the prognosis and survival rate of BC patients. The result showed that human leukocyte antigen-related proteins and macrophage M2 scores were remarkably highly expressed in the high-risk group, whereas CD8+ T cells, natural killer cells, M1, and other anti-tumor cells were lowly expressed. The model could be used as an independent prognostic factor to predict the prognosis of BC patients. The results of qRT-PCR validation were consistent with the results in the database, that is, except DLG3, the other four feature genes were lowly expressed in BC. The five-gene model established in this study can predict the prognostic and immune mode of BC patients effectively, which is anticipated to become a feasible molecular target for BC therapy.

A lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material (LRMC) is currently considered as one of the most promising next-generation materials for lithium-ion batteries, which has received much attention, but the LRMC still faces some key scientific issues to break through, such as poor rate capacity, rapid voltage, capacity decay, and low first coulomb efficiency. In this work, homogeneous Li2ZrO3 (LZO) was successfully coated on the surface of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 (LRO) by molten salt-assisted sintering technology. Li2ZrO3 has good chemical and electrochemical stability, which can effectively inhibit the side reaction between electrode materials and electrolytes and reduce the dissolution of transition metal ions. Thus, the as-prepared LRO@LZO composites are expected to improve the cycling performance. It can be found that the discharge specific capacity of LRO is 271 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C, and the capacity retention rate is still 93.7% after 100 cycles at 1 C. In addition, Li2ZrO3 is an excellent lithium-ion conductor, which is prone to increasing the lithium-ion transfer rate and improving the rate capacity of LRO. Therefore, this study provides a new solution to improve the structure stability and electrochemical performance of LRMCs.

Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric disease, and its pathogenesis is still unclear. Currently, studies on the pathogenesis of depression are mainly focused on the brain. The liver can modulate brain function via the liver-brain axis, indicating that the liver plays an important role in the development of depression. This study aims to explore the protective effect of quercetin against chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced metabolic changes and the corresponding mechanisms in the rat liver based on untargeted metabolomics technology. In this study, 96 male rats were divided into six groups: control, different doses of quercetin (10 mg per kg bw or 50 mg per kg bw), CUMS, and CUMS + different doses of quercetin. After 8 weeks of CUMS modeling, the liver samples were collected for metabolomics analysis. A total of 17 altered metabolites were identified, including D-glutamic acid, S-adenosylmethionine, lithocholylglycine, L-homocystine, prostaglandin PGE2, leukotriene E4, cholic acid, 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid, taurochenodeoxycholic acid, S-adenosylhomocysteine, deoxycholic acid, folic acid, L-methionine, leukotriene C5, estriol-17-glucuronide, PE, and PC, indicating that methionine metabolism, bile acid metabolism, and phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis are the major pathways involved in CUMS-induced hepatic metabolic disorders. Hepatic methylation damage may play a role in the pathophysiology of depression, as evidenced by the first discovery of the abnormality of hepatic methionine metabolism. Abnormal changes in hepatic bile acids may provide stronger evidence for depression pathogenesis involving the microbiota-gut-brain axis, suggesting that the liver is involved in depression development and may be a treatment target. The quercetin treatment alleviated the CUMS-induced liver metabolism disorder, suggesting that quercetin may protect against depression by regulating liver metabolism.

As an important fruit pest of global significance, Drosophila suzukii occupies a special ecological niche, with the characteristics of high sugar and low protein contents. This niche differs from those occupied by other fruit-damaging Drosophila species. Gut bacteria substantially impact the physiology and ecology of insects. However, the contribution of gut microbes to the fitness of D. suzukii in their special ecological niche remains unclear. In this study, the effect of Klebsiella oxytoca on the development of D. suzukii was examined at physiological and molecular levels. The results showed that, after the removal of gut microbiota, the survival rate and longevity of axenic D. suzukii decreased significantly. Reintroduction of K. oxytoca to the midgut of D. suzukii advanced the development level of D. suzukii. The differentially expressed genes and metabolites between axenic and K. oxytoca-reintroduced D. suzukii were enriched in the pathways of carbohydrate metabolism. This advancement was achieved through an increased glycolysis rate and the regulation of the transcript level of key genes in the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway. Klebsiella oxytoca is likely to play an important role in increasing host fitness in their high-sugar ecological niche by stimulating the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway. As a protein source, bacteria can also provide direct nutrition for D. suzukii, which depends on the quantity or biomass of K. oxytoca. This result may provide a new target for controlling D. suzukii by inhibiting sugar metabolism through eliminating the effect of K. oxytoca and thus disrupting the balance of gut microbial communities.

Polyaniline (PANI), due to the various and controllable shapes, the environmental stability, the excellent physical and chemical property, has gained significant attention. PANI with abundant morphologies were successfully prepared through adjusting and controlling the state of the initial micelle-like in the micelle-like system composed by aniline and organic acids with relatively weak intermolecular interaction. Although the influence of the inorganic salts on their morphology, including the surface and the diameter, was investigated, the influence of salt on the nucleation of PANI was still unclear. Therefore, PANI nanofibers were fabricated through the addition of inorganic salt such as NaCl, MgSO4 and AlCl3 into the micelle-like composed of aniline and D-camphor-10-sulfonic acid. The influence of types and concentration of inorganic salts, doped acids and temperature on PANI was studied by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), UV-vis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy. In addition, in situ UV-vis and 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technology (NMR) were applied to observe the process of aniline polymerization, and it was indicated the polymerization rate of aniline changed after the addition of inorganic salt NaCl into the initial solution.

INTRODUCTION: Immunosuppressive therapy (IST) for acquired hemophilia A (AHA) results in remission within days to months in 60% to 80% of patients. However, little is known regarding the predictors of response. AIM: This study aimed to identify the factors that influence response to treatment. METHODS: The data of 42 patients with AHA from three hospitals were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: All 42 AHA patients received IST; complete treatment data were available for 34 patients. The response rate was 60% among the 5/34 (14.7%) patients who received steroids alone, 70.8% among the 24/34 (70.6%) patients who received steroids plus cyclophosphamide, and 80% among the 5/34 (14.7%) patients who received steroids plus cyclophosphamide and rituximab. Overall, 29/34 (85.3%) patients achieved CR; 4/34 (13.8%) of them relapsed after a median time of 410 (21-1279) days. Adverse events occurred in 14/34 (41.2%) patients: 13/34 (38.2%) had infections and 1/34 (2.9%) developed pancytopenia. In univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, FVIII inhibitor titer ≥20 BU/mL was the only significant prognostic factor affecting time to CR. No variable had significant effect on OS. CONCLUSION: FVIII inhibitory antibody titer ≥20 BU/mL appears to be an important predictor of time to complete response in patients with acquired hemophilia A treated with immunosuppressive therapy.

Flammulina filiformis (F. filiformis) is one of the four major edible types of fungus in the world and has been cultivated in China since 800 CE (Anno Domini). Some of the most essential criteria for evaluating the quality of F. filiformis are the types and contents of volatile components present. A focused study on screened the terpene synthase genes involved in the aroma of offspring and compared key terpenoids between parents and offspring, which is helpful for the development and application of F. filiformis. Firstly, the volatile aroma components of parent and offspring F. filiformis were extracted using two pretreatment procedures, and then were semi-quantified by an internal standard. Forty-eight, fifty-eight, and forty-eight volatile compounds were identified in parents and offspring of three different strains, and 15, 22, and 12 aroma compounds (OAVs ≥ 1) were further screened out via calculating their odor activity values (OAVs). Terpenoids, in particular linalool and eucalyptol, which contribute more to the aroma, result in the unique green and grassy aroma of the offspring. At last, the F. filiformis genome was resequenced and the coordinates of genes related to terpenoid synthase were determined. The results showed that Scaffolds, including scaffold3.t874 and scaffold9.t157 were connected to terpenoid synthesis of offspring (No. 61523). The variant genes g269 and g61 were related to terpenoid synthase sequences. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the cultivation of more diverse and unique varieties of F. filiformis.

Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy has been linked to birth defects. But the directions of studies on the associations between air pollutants exposure and effect on the incidence of congenital heart disease (CHDs) were inconsistent. To date, few studies were concentrated on the effects of both particulate matter and gaseous air pollutant exposure on CHDs across the full gestational week simultaneously. Our study aimed to investigate the critical exposure windows for each air pollutant throughout 40 gestational weeks. Data on CHDs, air pollution, and meteorological factors from 2013 to 2019 were collected in Lanzhou, China. A distributed lag nonlinear model combined with a quasi-Poisson regression model was applied to evaluate the weekly exposure-lag-response association between air pollutants levels and CHDs, and the subgroup analyses were conducted by gender (baby boy and baby girl). The study included 1607 mother-infant pairs. The results demonstrated that exposure of pregnant women to particulate matter ≤ 5 µm (PM2.5) at lag 1-4 weeks was significantly associated with the risk of CHDs, and the strongest effects were observed in the lag 1 week (1.150, 95%CI 1.059-1.248). For exposure to particulate matter ≤ 10 µm (PM10) at lag 1-3 weeks, the strongest effects were observed in the lag 1 week (1.075, 95% CI 1.026-1.128). For exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2) at lag 1-4 weeks, the strongest effects were observed in the lag 1 week (1.154, 95% CI 1.025-1.299). For exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) at lag 1-3 weeks, the strongest effects were observed in the lag 1 week (1.089, 95% CI 1.002-1.183). For exposure to ozone (O3) concentration at lag 9-15 weeks, the strongest effects were observed in the lag 15 weeks (1.628, 95% CI 1.001-2.649). The cumulative effects of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and CO along weeks with a maximum of 1.609 (95%CI 1.000-2.589), 1.286 (95%CI 1.007-1.641), 1.648 (95%CI 1.018-2.668), and 1.368 (95%CI 1.003, 1.865), respectively. The effects were obvious in the initial gestational weeks too. Through the gender stratification analysis, the air pollutants with significant effects were PM2.5 for baby boys and PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, NO2, and O3 for baby girl. For the relationship between CHDs and air pollution in Lanzhou, PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, and O3 played an important role in the initial gestational weeks, especially for baby girl.

RESUMO

Diabetic foot is one of the most common complications of diabetic mellitus (DM). This DM patient was admitted to our hospital presented with a 2-month history of plantar lesion. Shortly afterward, the patient appeared hemoptysis, respiratory failure, and multiple purpuric papules on his limbs. Biopsy of left plantar lesions demonstrated angiosarcoma. Therefore, it is suggested that tissue biopsy should be taken as early as possible for DM patients with prolonged nonhealing wounds.

Endoparasitoid wasps introduce venom into their host insects during the egg-laying stage. Venom proteins play various roles in the host physiology, development, immunity, and behavior manipulation and regulation. In this study, we identified a venom protein, MmRho1, a small guanine nucleotide-binding protein derived from ovary in the endoparasitoid wasp Microplitis mediator and found that knockdown of its expression by RNA interference caused down-regulation of vitellogenin and juvenile hormone, egg production, and cocoons formation in the female wasps. We demonstrated that MmRho1 entered the cotton bollworm's (host) hemocytes and suppressed cellular immune responses after parasitism using immunofluorescence staining. Furthermore, wasp MmRho1 interacted with the cotton bollworm's actin cytoskeleton rearrangement regulator diaphanous by yeast 2-hybrid and glutathione s-transferase pull-down. In conclusion, this study indicates that MmRho1 plays dual roles in wasp development and the suppression of the host insect cellular immune responses.

Few studies have evaluated the association between air pollutants and neural tube defects (NTDs). Moreover, the existing research ignores the lag effect of air pollution on health and provides inconsistent epidemiological evidence. We aim to estimate the association between air pollution and NTDs during the first trimester of pregnancy and identify specific susceptible windows. Birth data was collected from the Birth Defects Surveillance Network in Lanzhou from September 1, 2014, to December 31, 2019. Air quality and meteorological data were collected from ambient air monitoring stations and China Meteorological Data Network. The log connection function of the Poisson distribution function is used to establish a DLNM model to estimate the exposure-effect relationship and exposure-lag relationship association between air pollutants levels and NTDs. There were 320,787 perinatal infants in Lanzhou from September 1, 2014, to December 31, 2019, and 486 cases of NTDs (1.5‰). The result indicates that exposure to inhalable particles (PM10) at lag 2-4 weeks was significantly associated with the risk of NTDs, with the most significant impact at the lag 2 week (RR=1.048, 95%CI, 1.015-1.084). Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at the lag 2 week was significantly associated with the risk of NTDs, with the most significant impact at the lag 2 week (RR=1.077, 95%CI, 1.004-1.155). Exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at lag 3-6weeks was significantly associated with the risk of NTDs, with the most significant impact at the lag 4 week (RR=1.220, 95%CI, 1.105-1.348; RR=1.143, 95%CI, 1.048-1.245). This study provides further evidence that exposure to air pollutants in the first trimester of pregnancy significantly increases the risk of neural tube defects.
